Dr. David Olson, Professor, Loyola University Chicago and Dr. Don Stemen, Professor, Loyola University Chicago
Details
Loyola University Chicago’s Center for Criminal Justice has been conducting an evaluation of the implementation and impact of Illinois’ Pretrial Fairness Act (PFA) for the past 3 years. Using a pre- post-research design, the evaluation involved interviews with key stakeholders, court observations, and detailed analyses of court and jail data to gauge the degree to which various practices and outcomes changed due to the PFA. Attendees will gain an understanding of how the PFA has been implemented and its impact on arrest/booking practices, pretrial jail and supervision populations, rates of pretrial detention, rates of failure to appear, rates of new arrests during pretrial release, and levels of crime in the community. Attendees will also gain an understanding of how the implementation and impact of the PFA has varied across Illinois’ diverse counties.
